Dried Apple Slices (Schnitz)
Dried apple slices, often called schnitz, are simply peeled apples that have been thinly sliced and slowly dried until chewy and shelf-stable. They’re perfect for snacking, baking into pies or stack cakes, or simmering into old-fashioned fried apples just like grandma used to make. 🍎
Course dehydrated
Cuisine American
- 6 cups apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Golden Delicious work well)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
Dehydrate
Lay the apple slices in a single layer on your dehydrator trays. Don’t overlap them — they need space to dry properly. Set your dehydrator to 135°F (57°C) and let them dry for 6–12 hours, turning occasionally, until they’re leathery and pliable but not brittle.
No dehydrator? No problem. Arrange the slices on parchment-lined baking sheets and set your oven to its lowest temperature (around 140°F/60°C). Prop the door open slightly to let moisture escape and dry for 8–10 hours, turning occasionally, until done.
